At the Kuskovo estate, which is subordinate to the capital Department of Culture, preparations for the winter season have begun. Today, museum specialists will cover the marble sculptures with protective cases. Such work is carried out annually before the onset of cold weather. In spring, the statues and busts will be unveiled again for visitors.

Since October 14, the Kuskovo estate has switched to winter operating hours. The park, as well as the Hermitage Pavilion, the Large Stone Greenhouse, the Dutch and Italian Houses, are open to visitors until 6:00 PM; the palace and the Grotto Pavilion are open until 4:00 PM.

On October 21, visitors are invited to the Swiss chalet for a tour of the exhibition “Count S.D. Sheremetev. Pages of History”. On October 22, there will be an excursion program “Sculpture. Simply about the complex”, and on November 1 — an overview tour “Architectural and park ensemble of the Kuskovo estate”.

Marble column and busts of ancient gods

Count Pyotr Sheremetev collected works for the estate for almost 40 years. Today, different types of sculptures are installed in the Kuskovo park, such as busts of ancient gods and rulers, as well as allegorical figures embodying the elements and seasons.

A marble column with a statue of Minerva, embodying Empress Catherine I who visited Kuskovo several times, occupies a central place in the parterre. The statues and busts served an educational function, acquainting guests with ancient history and mythology.

The Kuskovo Estate is a federally significant cultural heritage site, part of the Ostankino and Kuskovo museum-reserve. Its park, with geometric landscaping, was created in the finest traditions of classical French park ensembles with their parterres and linden alleys. In the 18th century, Kuskovo was called the Moscow Region Versailles — the estate was famous for its lavish balls and theatrical performances, just like the famous residence of the French kings.
