In Moscow, 11 specially protected green areas (SPGAs) were surveyed. Experts found that more than 70 percent of their area has high and medium natural value. The study was conducted by the city Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection in collaboration with the A.N. Severtsov Institute of Ecology and Evolution Problems of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

“We applied a synergistic approach — field observations, environmental DNA (eDNA) analysis, and climate modeling. The survey covered more than 9,800 hectares and showed that 71.2 percent of the specially protected green areas of Moscow have high and medium natural value. Moscow’s green fund is the city’s decoration; our natural infrastructure filters the air, cools the streets, and preserves rare species. We take care of green areas based on verified scientific data — this is the foundation of sustainable development of the metropolis for decades,” she said

Yulia Urozhayeva, head of the Department of Environmental Management and Protection of the City of Moscow.

Most of the surveyed areas retain the ability to perform ecological functions even under dense urban development. They function as heat islands: according to climate modeling, the temperature difference compared to residential buildings reaches four degrees.

Based on this data, they create nature conservation programs and develop a unified green framework for the capital.

A large-scale project is presented on the mos.ru portal special project, dedicated to the development of key areas of Moscow. These include transport, industry, healthcare, education, sports, and construction. The special project helps to understand how the capital has changed over recent years, what initiatives aimed at making residents’ lives even more comfortable are currently being implemented, and what awaits Moscow and its inhabitants in the near future.

On the project page “Ecology” you can learn about how the capital is renewing its green fund and expanding environmental education, as well as preparing to make eco-solutions part of everyday life.
