In October, small mammals in Moscow are actively preparing for winter: they are gathering food supplies and looking for shelters to hibernate. In the green areas of the capital, animals find everything necessary to survive the cold season. Specialists from the capital Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection told about the features of wintering of endangered representatives of small fauna.
Wood mouse: hibernation in an underground shelter
The wood mouse can be identified by the black stripe on its back and its tail, which is about one third longer than its body.
This little animal feeds on insect larvae, spiders, berries, and seeds. It usually does not dig its own burrows, preferring to occupy those of others. When cold weather arrives, the wood mouse finds a secure underground shelter and falls into a deep hibernation.
Yellow-throated mouse: several kilograms of reserves
In the city, the yellow-throated mouse is also found, which is slightly larger than ordinary mice. Its main features are large ears and a distinctive band of yellow fur around the neck. The little animal is an excellent climber and lives in broad-leaved and mixed forests and shrub thickets.
The yellow-throated mouse feeds on tree seeds, grasses, and insects. By winter, it makes substantial reserves. In some storerooms, up to several kilograms of acorns and linden seeds can be stored.
As the cold season approaches, the little animal sometimes moves closer to human dwellings and even spends the winter in buildings. However, unlike the house mouse, it always returns to the forest in spring.
Common hamster: winter sleep with breaks for food
In addition, the common hamster inhabits the green areas of the capital. It can be recognized by its bright, contrasting coloration: a reddish-brown back, a black belly, and two large light spots on its sides.
The animal leads a nocturnal lifestyle and in winter falls into a brief hibernation in a deep burrow inaccessible to predators. From time to time, the hamster wakes up to replenish itself with pre-stored supplies of grains and vegetables.
How to help wild animals
Small mammals play an important role in maintaining the ecological balance of the city. Therefore, they require the same careful treatment as other inhabitants of parks and forests.
Experts remind that it is forbidden to make noise and litter in green areas, to take wild animals and plants home. Dogs must be walked on a leash. Careful treatment of nature helps preserve the biodiversity of the capital.
