More and more electric buses are being deployed on main routes. On weekdays, they carry over 310 thousand people daily. Comfortable and safe vehicles transport passengers to rail network stations, workplaces and educational institutions, as well as social, cultural, and sports facilities. This was reported by the Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Transport and Industry. Maxim Liksutov.

“By the instruction of Sergey Sobyanin, we continue to develop the network of mainline ground transport routes and enhance passenger travel comfort. On weekdays, electric buses on main routes make more than 310 thousand trips on average. To make modern eco-friendly transport more accessible to Muscovites and visitors to the capital, we are increasing the number of modern vehicles, providing the necessary infrastructure, and launching new routes,” added Maksim Liksutov.

Trunk routes connect the rail frame stations and create a unified transport network. They run along the main streets of the capital, link districts with the city center, and help passengers reach their destinations comfortably. Today, more than 430 electric buses operate on 25 trunk routes. The most popular among them is M3. On weekdays, it is used by over 30,000 passengers.

On October 8, 2026, it will be 10 years since the emergence of trunk routes in the capital. During this time, they have undergone several stages of development and have become an important part of the city’s surface transport.

The basis for changing the routes is the need to connect new residential areas with metro stations and Moscow Central Diameters, so that Muscovites can get to work, school, as well as hospitals, cultural centers, and other important city facilities more quickly.

The city’s priority is comfort and safety, so it is important to ensure that as many residents as possible have access to quality transportation near their homes. This not only improves the lives of city dwellers but also helps reduce the burden on the roads.

Environmental Transport

Since 2018, innovative electric-powered vehicles have been arriving in the capital. Today, the network of ground electric transport covers all districts of Moscow. Electric buses offer a smooth ride with no noise or vibrations, making trips even more comfortable. The main advantage of such transport is the absence of negative impact on the city’s ecology.

Today, there are more than three thousand electric buses in Moscow. On weekdays, passengers make on average over 1.2 million trips on them, and since 2018, their total number has exceeded 1.1 billion.

New deliveries of vehicles and the development of charging infrastructure will enable the creation of more electric bus routes in Moscow. The order for the production of modern vehicles for the capital supports employment in other regions and stimulates the development of the domestic industry.

Electric transport provides a high level of service and meets strict safety standards. Low-floor electric buses are fully adapted for passengers with limited mobility. They are equipped with folding ramps and driver call buttons. If necessary, the driver will assist with boarding and disembarking.

Bicycles, strollers, and large luggage can be placed on the designated storage platform. USB ports are provided for charging gadgets, and media screens display up-to-date information about upcoming stops and possible transfers.

The climate control system allows maintaining an optimal temperature inside the car cabin at any time of the year. The air curtain, which activates when the doors are opened, helps to preserve the temperature.

The electric buses have buttons for selective door opening. For passenger safety, the buses are equipped with external and internal video cameras. Digital validators are located near the doors, allowing passengers to pay their fare conveniently.

Since 2022, the capital has been supplied with equipment of improved configuration. Adaptive lighting in such electric buses changes from a cold shade to a warm one at 2:00 PM. The front route indicator has been increased by 18 percent, making the number visible from afar. The electric heater does not negatively impact the environment and maintains an optimal temperature. The range has increased from 40–50 to 80–90 kilometers, while the weight of the vehicle has remained the same.

Today, electric buses operate at 13 sites of Mosgortrans. Moscow was the first in Russia to start building modern depots for such transport. In 2022, the first electric bus depot in Russia and the largest in Europe, “Krasnaya Pakhra,” opened in the Troitsky and Novomoskovsky Administrative Okrugs (TiNAO). The buses began running routes in TiNAO.

A year later, the Mitino park was built in the northwest of the capital. After its opening, electric buses began operating on routes in 20 districts of Moscow and two nearby cities in the Moscow region. At the end of 2023, the third innovative park — Saltykovka — opened, serving routes in the east.

In 2025, new generation KamAZ-52222 electric buses were put into service. Thanks to the redesign, the storage area has become 15 percent larger. The cabin now includes places for hand luggage, and the door construction has been changed. The climate control system has become more efficient, and light strips indicating door opening and closing were installed on the doors. The exterior design of the vehicles now better corresponds to modern trends in global industrial design.

Next-generation electric buses are being developed taking into account the operating experience of earlier models and passenger feedback. Since their launch on routes, the vehicles have traveled over 10 million kilometers and have proven themselves well. This equipment is serviced at 10 Mosgortrans facilities.

According to data from MosEcoMonitoring of the capital Department of Nature Management and Environmental Protection, thanks to the replacement of buses with electric buses from 2018 to 2025, Moscow managed to avoid the emission of about 1.3 thousand tons of pollutants and 300 thousand tons of carbon dioxide — equivalent to greenhouse gases. In 2025 alone, nearly 380 tons of pollutants and 110 thousand tons of carbon dioxide did not enter the air thanks to environmentally friendly transport.

More than 700 new buses and electric buses have been delivered to Mosgortrans fleets since the beginning of the yearModern electric buses have started operating on route No. 847 in northern Moscow

In accordance with the goals of the national project “Infrastructure for Life” In Moscow, great attention is paid to the modernization of social and communal infrastructure, including the increase in the number of convenient urban transport routes and the renewal of the rolling stock. In addition, as part of the national project, the capital has begun the development of the Central Transport Hub, which will become a unified network with predictable suburban rail transport for more than 30 million residents of 11 regions of Russia.
