Shenyang, October 15 /Xinhua/ — A new bridge over the Yalu River, the border river between the PRC and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea /DPRK/, was officially opened for traffic on Thursday, and both sides jointly held a ceremony to inaugurate this cross-border transport artery.

The new cable-stayed bridge over the Yalu River serves as a cross-border transportation link between the city of Dandong in Liaoning Province /Northeast China/ and the city of Sinuiju in Phyonganbuk-do Province /DPRK/.

The two-tower cable-stayed bridge with two planes of cables has a roadway width of 28.5 meters, designed for four lanes of two-way traffic, and its height above the water allows vessels with a displacement of up to 3,000 tons to pass.

After the bridge opens, it will contribute to the further development of trade-economic cooperation and people-to-people exchanges between the two countries, said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning on Wednesday.

China and North Korea are friendly neighbors connected by shared mountains and rivers, and the new bridge over the Yalu River is an important infrastructure facility ensuring connectivity between the two countries, Mao Ning said at a regular press briefing.

The port of Dandong is the largest border trading port in China with the DPRK. Before the construction of the new road bridge, the existing bridge over the Yalu River, also known as the China-DPRK Friendship Bridge, served as a combined road-rail bridge, but the old bridge could only allow trucks weighing no more than 20 tons to pass in one direction.

In this regard, China and the DPRK agreed in 2010 to build a new road bridge downstream from the existing bridge.
