Capital eco-centers have organized a new format of extracurricular activities for younger schoolchildren. At the end of September, they launched the “Green After-School” project. Classes are held in 10 Moscow schools and are dedicated to nature and its seasonal changes, biodiversity, and the impact of humans on these processes.

The main objective of the project is to develop a holistic scientific worldview in primary school children through practice. Instead of just listening to theory, the children conduct observations, experiments, and tests that complement and deepen the school course “The Surrounding World.”

“We are developing a systematic approach to environmental education for schoolchildren. The ‘Green After-School Program’ complements existing projects and campaigns and makes working with children regular. This is an investment in the city’s future. A child who today conducts an experiment with soil or observes birds will tomorrow become a city dweller who understands how the nature of the metropolis is organized,” noted Elena Zharkova, head of the capital’s department of environmental education and awareness.

Department of Nature Management and Environmental Protection.

Lessons take place once a week from September to May and last 45–60 minutes. Classes are paused during school holidays. The program expands on first-grade topics such as “What is nature,” “Living and non-living nature,” “Seasonal changes,” “Plants and animals,” and “Humans and nature.” Each lesson includes observation, experience or experiment, as well as creativity and one practical assignment.

The “Green After-School Program” makes ecological activities a part of the usual after-school care and helps engage more younger students in them. Regular interaction with an environmental specialist helps children reinforce good habits, including separate waste collection, careful use of resources, and caring for the city’s biodiversity. The project’s near-term development plans include increasing the number of schools participating in it.

Environmental educational activities, conducted with the support of the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection of the city of Moscow, contribute to the implementation of the national project “Environmental Well-being”.
