“The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde”

Dates: October 24 and 30, November 4 and 20

It is said for a reason that another person’s soul is darkness. The protagonist of the play experienced this metaphor firsthand. “The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde”, which is playing at the ‘School of Dramatic Art’ theatre. The production is based on the novella of the same name by Robert Louis Stevenson.

The story begins with an almost innocent experiment: the kind and successful Dr. Jekyll decided to explore the boundaries of his own morality. But as soon as he separated light from darkness, Hyde appeared—a double deprived of conscience, doubts, and fear of the law. Gradually, the scientific experiment becomes a trap for the doctor: Hyde grows stronger and dominates, while Jekyll becomes a prisoner of his own shadow.

The theme of doubling is revealed in the play as an anxious exploration of the soul’s underground — that which is repressed, suppressed, but never disappears.

Director, playwright, and musical arranger — Gleb Cherepanov. The play features Andrey Kharenko, Evgeny Polyakov, Konstantin Sakovich, Anastasia Privalova, and other actors.

“Black Blizzard”

Dates: 6 and 7 November

Absurdist horror takes you further away from familiar reality “Black Blizzard” — a joint project of the theaters “Praktika” and “Dmitry Brusnikin’s Workshop” based on the play by Anastasia Bukreeva.

An office worker from Sverdlovsk is sent on a business trip from the capital to the northern town of N., where everything is steeped in mysticism. In the fierce blizzard, one can encounter bears and dead miners, and while escaping from the cold — true love. The northern world is wary of strangers and reluctant to let them go.

In search of the way home, Sverdlov walks around the entire city and talks to random passersby. Gradually, the conversations begin to break off and overlap, the familiar reality blends with a viscous timelessness, and a black blizzard approaches the city, sweeping away all landmarks.

In this strange journey, the hero returns to his family history, notices patterns of “Russiness” in those around him, and gradually learns to accept hidden feelings. Thus, through the mystical plot, a story of love emerges, born despite external circumstances and the biting frost.

The play is built on repetitions reminiscent of a fairy tale or a magical spell. And the northern city on stage is enclosed in a metal pavilion, the contents of which change throughout the performance.

Director — Sergey Shchedrin. The roles are performed by Ilya Barabanov, Konstantin Bobkov, Yuliya Djulai, Vladimir Kanukhin, and Polina Povtar.

“The Salem Witches”

Dates: 23 October, 12 and 23 November

Mysticism at the Theater on Trubnaya is hidden in the play “The Salem Witches” based on Arthur Miller’s play “The Crucible.”

The plot begins with girls playing witches in the forest, which turns into real accusations of witchcraft. People who have known each other all their lives are now ready to send their neighbor to death just to save themselves. At the center of this madness is the main character — farmer John Proctor. He must choose: to confess to what he did not do and survive, or to uphold the truth at the cost of his own life.

The decorations accurately convey the atmosphere of a 17th-century American village — with thatched roofs, wooden fences, and wells.

Behind the plot about medieval superstitions lies a story of how fear can destroy society, and universal belief in lies can turn an innocent person into a criminal.

Director — Dmitry Astrakhan. Starring Alexander Ovchinnikov, Miroslava Mikhailova, Alexey Surensky, Evdokia Germanova, Vadim Kolganov, Alexander Mokhov, and other theater actors.

“Heart of a Dog”

Dates: October 17 and 30

Recently, the premiere of a play took place at the Nikita Mikhalkov’s “Workshop 12” theater “Heart of a Dog”. In the new interpretation of Mikhail Bulgakov’s famous story, the director speaks about human nature and searches for the boundary between moral and artificially created.

While preserving the literary foundation and ironic intonation of the work, the creative team addresses issues that remain relevant today. The story turns into a theatrical exploration of human identity and the creator’s responsibility.

One of the main expressive means becomes movement. The plastic design is arranged so that the actors’ gestures do not just complement what is happening, but help to reveal the concept of the production. Special attention was paid to the atmosphere of medical practice in the 1920s-1930s. Medical specialists were involved in the work, who helped to more accurately convey the details of the professors’ daily lives and the clinical logic of the era.

The director is Sergey Gazarov. The play features Fyodor Lavrov, Alexey Shevchenkov, Viktor Rakov, Danila Dzygar, Sergey Stepanchenko, Nadezhda Filippova, and other troupe members.

Phantasmagoria and satire: the new “Heart of a Dog” will be shown at Nikita Mikhalkov’s “Workshop 12”

“Flowers for Algernon. 30 Years Later”

Dates: October 24 and November 18

The “Modern” Theater invites you to continue the story of Charlie Gordon from Daniel Keyes’ work. It can be seen in the play “Flowers for Algernon. 30 Years Later”. The authors moved the main character several decades into the future to show how his fate could have unfolded in the modern world.

Once, Charlie volunteered for Dr. Strauss’s experiment on artificially enhancing intelligence. After brain surgery, the hero’s IQ began to rise rapidly, but gradually his personality and connection with the surrounding world were lost. By Charlie’s side remained Alice, who accepted him as he was, and his friend Fay, who showed him real life. However, love and happiness remained unattainable for the hero. Thirty years later, Charlie must once again find his place in a changed reality.

At the heart of the production are the relationships between a man and a woman, the desire for love, understanding, and acceptance. The technological nature of the modern world is highlighted by original decorations and lighting effects.

Director — Yuri Grymov, playwright — Maria Sulchani. The performance features Alexander Serikov, Lyudmila Pogorelova, Konstantin Konushkin, Nadezhda Menshova, Alexey Bagdasarov, Alexander Borisov, and other actors.
