Staff of the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) located in Ukraine reported that the attacks carried out over the past weekend resulted in civilian casualties, damaged critical infrastructure, and caused new evacuations from front-line areas.
According to local authorities, from Friday to Monday morning, 35 civilians were killed and nearly 200 were injured. “We, of course, condemn any attacks on civilians,” emphasized UN Secretary-General’s spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric while reporting this information at a briefing in New York.
Only in Zaporizhzhia, according to local authorities, 20 people were killed as a result of Saturday’s attack, including four children, and more than 30 were injured. UN humanitarian coordinator Matthias Schmale condemned this strike and emphasized that it is yet another indication of the severe consequences for the civilian population when guided aerial bombs are dropped on densely populated areas.
The strikes damaged the energy infrastructure, including a power plant in the Kharkiv region. On Saturday, the shock wave also affected the offices of the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) in Mykolaiv.
Humanitarian workers, with the support of UN agencies, provide emergency medical and psychological assistance to the victims, supply materials for building shelters, offer hot meals, and register people to receive financial aid.
