Top news of the day at the UN and worldwide: civilian casualties in Ukraine, Houthi attacks on airports in Saudi Arabia, worsening hunger situation in Sudan, new floods in Nepal.
Strikes on Ukraine
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs reports that strikes over the past weekend resulted in civilian casualties in Ukraine, damaged infrastructure, and forced new evacuations. According to local authorities, from Friday to Monday morning, 35 civilians were killed and nearly 200 were injured. On Saturday, the blast wave affected the offices of the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) in Mykolaiv. Humanitarian organizations are providing emergency assistance, supplying materials for housing repairs and hot meals, and registering people for financial aid.
Houthi attacks
UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk expressed deep concern over a series of Houthi attacks on airports in Saudi Arabia carried out in recent days. According to him, these attacks resulted in the deaths and injuries of dozens of Saudi citizens and foreigners. Türk reminded that international humanitarian law clearly prohibits attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure. He emphasized that these attacks, as well as other alleged violations by parties to the conflict, must be thoroughly investigated and those responsible held accountable.
Hunger in Sudan
The threat of hunger is increasing in the war-torn regions of Sudan: in Darfur and Kordofan, the situation is worsened by severe drought caused by the El Niño phenomenon. This was warned on Monday by the global food security monitoring system, which operates with the support of the UN. According to the latest data, cases of malnutrition are rising in several areas of the country. At the same time, aid delivery is hindered by lack of funding, insecurity, and limited access. The UN is also concerned about reports of ongoing airstrikes and drone attacks in Sudan, which cause death and injuries among civilians.
Floods in Nepal
UN agencies quickly came to the aid of Nepal following sudden floods in the central Gorkha district that occurred on Sunday. The disaster washed away houses and bridges. According to authorities, at least five people are reported missing, and 95 have been rescued. The number of victims runs into the hundreds. Nepalese communities have still not recovered from the effects of the massive flood that took place at the end of August after a glacier collapsed in the Himalayas. At least 1,400 people died then, and more than 5,000 are still listed as missing.
