On Monday, the World Food Forum opened in Rome. The event is held at the headquarters of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and brings together world leaders, researchers, scientists, investors, farmers, fishery workers, representatives of indigenous peoples, and youth from around the globe.
Together, they will try to find solutions for transforming agri-food systems. The main task of the forum is to show how science, technology, innovation, and traditional knowledge help address increasingly complex global issues.
“The measures we are taking today – implementing new technologies, turning to the wisdom of ancestors and indigenous peoples, empowering youth – will determine whether the agri-food systems of tomorrow can feed a growing and changing world,” said FAO Director-General Qu Dongyu at the forum opening.
Today, about 673 million people worldwide suffer from hunger, and 2.6 billion people cannot afford healthy food.
The head of the FAO noted that innovation and the intensification of joint actions are more important than ever. After all, extreme weather events are becoming increasingly frequent and destructive, biodiversity is shrinking, the planet’s water resources are under enormous strain, and many countries face declining agricultural productivity and a lack of opportunities for young people.
“We must act on a larger scale and more effectively,” said Qu Dongyu. “We need innovations in technologies and business models, in our mindset, in approaches to design and collaboration. This is precisely why the World Food Forum was created.”
The opening ceremony was also attended by heads of state and government, including the presidents of Angola, Peru, Turkey, the Prime Minister of Italy, and the Acting President of Venezuela. The leaders addressed the forum participants either in person or via video link.
The World Food Forum, the main event of FAO, is being held for the sixth time. It has become one of the largest global platforms where the transformation of agri-food systems is discussed. The meeting aims to stimulate dialogue, cooperation, and exchange of ideas to accelerate progress in creating more efficient, inclusive, and resilient food systems.
