From October 12 to 25, the exhibition “Journey to the Heart of Siberia” is taking place in the northern rosary at VDNKh, dedicated to the Putorana Plateau — one of the most mysterious and inaccessible places in the Krasnoyarsk Territory. Visitors will see picturesque shots of waterfalls, mountain lakes, and unique nature. Admission is free.
The photographer Andrey Stepanov went to the Putorana Plateau at the age of 60 to tell about the grandeur of this unique place through his photographs, as well as to convey the special atmosphere of silence and solitude. His wife and creative producer Valentina Shumilova supported the idea and helped turn the trip into a creative project, which made it possible to showcase the beauty of the natural attraction through artistic photo stories.
Through Andrey Stepanov’s lens, the Putorana Plateau appears as a pristine space where nature demonstrates its absolute power, which humans can only accept.

The Putorana Plateau ranks first in Russia in terms of the number of waterfalls. There are hundreds here, and according to some estimates, more than a thousand. The name of the plateau comes from the language of the indigenous peoples of the North. Thus, in Evenki it means “land of lakes” or “place with steep banks,” and this is no coincidence: according to various sources, the plateau has between 22,000 and 25,000 lakes. You can get here either by helicopter or by water transport. The area of the territory is about 250,000 square kilometers.
Thanks to its volcanic origin, the plateau here has an unusual relief — flat tops on the mountains. Ancient geological processes shaped this territory from solidified lava flows more than 250 million years ago. The local canyons can reach depths of about a kilometer. In photographs, they may appear as shadows or horizon lines, but in reality, they are fractures on the plateau’s surface.
In the central part of the territory lies the Putorana State Nature Reserve, established in 1988. Rare animal species are found on the plateau, including the snow sheep, or the Putorana subspecies of the muskox, which is considered one of the symbols of this area. The Putorana Plateau is also an important watershed region of Siberia. Rivers that either originate here or flow through belong to the basins of the Yenisei, Khatanga, and Pyasina.
