Beijing, October 11 /Xinhua/ — The recent speech of Taiwan Administration Chief Lai Ching-te once again revealed his true nature as a ‘source of problems for Taiwan’ and a ‘threat to peace,’ said Chen Xi, official spokesman for the Ministry of National Defense of the People’s Republic of China, on Sunday.
Chen Xi made this statement in response to a request to comment on the speech Lai Ching-te gave in Taipei on Saturday, in which he reiterated his separatist position regarding the so-called “Taiwan independence,” as well as incited confrontation between the two sides of the strait.
Chen Xi noted that in recent years the authorities of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) have not ceased attempts to achieve Taiwan’s independence and have rejected reunification of the country in pursuit of their own party interests, undermining stability in the Taiwan Strait and sacrificing Taiwan’s future.
The People’s Liberation Army of China regularly conducts exercises and combat training activities in the waters surrounding the island to deter separatist actions aimed at so-called “Taiwan independence,” as well as schemes of external interference, in order to ensure the security and well-being of Taiwanese compatriots, an official representative noted.
“We hope that Taiwanese compatriots will join with the mainland part of the country to fight separatist forces, resist foreign interference, preserve peace, and jointly share the fruits of national rejuvenation,” Chen Xi added.
The Taiwan issue arose as a result of the civil war fought between the forces led by the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the Kuomintang party about eight decades ago. In 1949, the defeated Kuomintang retreated to Taiwan, and under the leadership of the CPC, the People’s Republic of China was established.
The unresolved civil war and foreign intervention have led to a prolonged state of political confrontation between the two shores of the Taiwan Strait. However, the fact that Taiwan is an inseparable part of China’s territory has never changed.
