More than five thousand schoolchildren visited the site of the XXI International Festival “Science 0+” at the Moscow Palace of Pioneers on Vorobyovy Gory. In honor of the 65th anniversary of Yuri Gagarin’s flight, the main theme of this year’s event was space. The children conducted experiments and explored interactive exhibits. This was reported by the press service of the city Department of Education and Science.
“This year the festival is taking place in seven countries: Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, China, Uzbekistan, Brazil, and Cuba. At the Moscow Palace of Pioneers, the event was held for the 12th time. There, the children were clearly shown how physical laws affect everyday life, science, and future technologies. The children participated in experiments, visited the planetarium and a science game room, and learned about achievements in science and technology during lectures from experts,” the department’s press service noted.
History of domestic cosmonautics and scientific experiments
The main event of the children’s festival was a meeting dedicated to the key stages in the development of domestic astronautics — from the works of Konstantin Tsiolkovsky and the launch of the first rockets to the construction of the Russian Orbital Station and the planning of missions to the Moon and Mars. Vladimir Lositsky, General Director of the Alexander Serebrov USSR Cosmonaut Hero Foundation for the Support of Children’s Technical Creativity, told the students about this.
An important part of the festival’s program was also the meeting with Rae Kwon Chung — a Nobel laureate from South Korea, a member of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. He spoke about why the ability to care for people and the planet is becoming a real advantage, which professions arise from solving climate issues, and why artificial intelligence cannot replace a person who understands the value of nature and society.
Experiments were also conducted for schoolchildren. With the help of Tesla coils, the children were introduced to strong electromagnetic fields and learned about the operation of stun gun dischargers and the Van de Graaff electrostatic field generator. At the sites of scientific laboratories of leading universities and enterprises, young Muscovites discussed with active researchers the implementation of artificial intelligence in the field of satellite control and navigation. In addition, the children became acquainted with the development of onboard and special antennas, optical communication systems, space-based radiometric equipment, as well as radars, radiotelemetric, and relay systems.
At the exhibition of the National Research University “Moscow Power Engineering Institute,” guests learned how space technologies are applied in energy, electrical engineering and lighting, radio electronics, and robotics. On a working model, young participants studied the operating principles of gyroscopic devices, which are widely used for the orientation and stabilization of spacecraft.
Film in the planetarium and solar rover
In the popular science cinema, guests were told about the process of creating animated films, and in the planetarium’s star hall, a full-dome film “The Space Story of Russia” was shown. The film was dedicated to the key achievements of domestic astronautics — from the first satellites to modern orbital stations.
Schoolchildren also attended more than 50 workshops. Participants assembled rocket models, a working incandescent light bulb, and a solar rover.
The International Science Festival “Science 0+” is the largest educational project in Russia and the world, as well as one of the key events of the Decade of Science and Technology declared by the President of the Russian Federation in 2022. The goal of the project is to show that science can be understandable and interesting for people of all ages, and to tell how scientific discoveries change our lives for the better. The program is held with the support of the Moscow Government.
Earlier, Sergey Sobyanin congratulated workers of additional education on professional holiday. He thanked them for their enormous work and care for the younger generation, wished them good health, new pedagogical ideas, and grateful students.
Participation of schoolchildren in creative competitions within the framework of additional education contributes to the development of diverse creative abilities and skills in children and corresponds to the objectives of the “All the Best for Children” project of the national project “Youth and Children”.
