It’s Friday on the calendar, which means it’s time to find out what GUU experts talked about in the media this week. The technological rivalry between the US and China, treasury bond yields and the role of AI, the yuan exchange rate after the holidays, economic problems of EU countries, talent retention trends, and the growth of agritourism – all of this was analyzed by the university’s faculty.
We take our favorite drink, wrap ourselves in a blanket, and dive into the news.
Technological rivalry between the USA and China commented Rector Vladimir Stroev. The professor noted that the disconnection between the USA and China will increase in the future, while technological competition between the countries will be the main marker of their economic confrontation.
The situation on the US stock market assessed the head of the Department of World Economy and International Economic Relations, Evgeny Smirnov. The expert points out that in the corporate sector of the US economy, technological companies play an increasingly significant role, whose dynamics are less dependent on global economic shocks.
Problems of Poland’s industry due to the refusal to trade with Russia commented Yevgeny Smirnov. The economist recalled that Poland had been pursuing a consistent policy of supply diversification even before 2022, increasingly focusing on energy resources from the USA, Saudi Arabia, and Norway.
Change in U.S. Treasury bond yields explained Evgeny Smirnov. One of the factors the professor mentioned was the development of artificial intelligence. “AI requires very high capital investments, often using borrowed funds. Treasury bonds compete for investors’ capital with corporate securities,” the economist explained.
About changes in the yuan exchange rate said Professor Nikolai Kuznetsov from the Department of Finance and Credit. The economist reminded that from October 1 to 7, Chinese banks, exchanges, and enterprises were not operating, which caused currency settlements to be temporarily halted. With the end of the holidays on October 8, counterparties began actively purchasing yuan, fulfilling the deferred demand.
How companies retain next-generation teams, said Associate Professor of the Personnel Management Department, Ekaterina Kashtanova. “People hold on not only to their salary: the company is increasingly perceived as a ‘second home’ where they want not just to survive, but to live comfortably and feel cared for,” the expert emphasized. Creating an atmosphere where one wants to work begins with understanding the needs of employees.
Why agritourism is gaining popularity in Russia, answered Vadim Zhukov, Associate Professor of the Department of Management in International Business and Tourism Industry. The expert reminded that state support for agritourism is constantly expanding; starting in 2026, it includes a subsidy to compensate expenses, allowing farmers to reimburse costs for tourist reception infrastructure.
The threat of default in leading European countries assessed Associate Professor of the Department of Economic Policy and Economic Measurements Maxim Chirkov. According to the economist, this threat is very high, as countries have accumulated a lot of debt and the cost of servicing it is becoming unbearable for them.
