On October 12, the 17th Moscow competition of reviews and critiques of new children’s books “Thoughtful Reader” will begin. The main requirement participants must fulfill is to select and review books from the annual recommended catalog of the A.P. Gaidar Central City Children’s Library, subordinated to the Moscow Department of Culture, “100 Best New Books for Children and Adolescents.”
Any child over 10 years old, as well as an adult: librarian, teacher, parent, or student of a relevant university, can participate in the competition. There are four categories: three children’s categories for students in grades 4–10, and one adult category for grade 11 students and leaders of children’s reading (parents, librarians, teachers, students). Submissions are accepted from Moscow and other regions of Russia.
Stage one: choose a book and write a review
The first stage of the competition will take place from October 12 to December 7. Participants need to choose books, write reviews or critiques, and send them to the email address: konkurs@gaidarovka-metod.ru. Library staff will help everyone in choosing books and resolving technical issues. A special shelf has been created in the LitRes e-store for contest participants. Using a library card on the platform, you can get a free list of publications included in the ‘100 Best New Books for Children and Teens’ catalog.

Second stage: summing up the results
The second stage will last from December 8, 2026, to February 8, 2027. Jury members will select finalists who will be invited to the award ceremony summarizing the contest results. Winners in all categories will be announced at the same event. The three books that receive the highest number of reviews will be awarded the honorary badge “Choice of the ‘Thoughtful Reader’ Contest.”

The competition has been held since 2010 with the support of the capital Department of Culture. Over 16 seasons, more than 10 thousand applications were received from all over Russia.
