At the Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University, a ceremony was held to present the diploma and mantle of Honorary Doctor of SPbPU to the Vice-President of the Russian Academy of Sciences, RAS Academician, and Scientific Director of the Central Aerohydrodynamic Institute named after Professor N. E. Zhukovsky, Sergey Chernyshyov.
The solemn event took place at the meeting of the Academic Council of SPbPU. As tradition, at the beginning of the ceremony, the student choir “Poligimniya” performed the anthem of the Polytechnic University, and then Gaudeamus igitur, to which for many years new Honorary Doctors of the Polytechnic have been dedicated.
The rector of SPbPU, Andrey Rudskoy, presented Sergey Chernyshyov with the badge of Honorary Doctor, a diploma, a plaque with the diploma, and a historical book about the university’s Honorary Doctors. Students dressed in early 20th-century polytechnic uniforms helped the academician don the gown and academic cap.
Sergey Leonidovich Chernyshyov is an outstanding Russian scientist, a flagship of our aerospace science. He has devoted his life to a very romantic profession that every boy dreams of — creating everything that flies. Not everyone is capable of this. Almost half a century ago, Sergey Leonidovich tied his fate to TsAGI and has since been developing domestic aviation and space exploration. Polytechnic University and TsAGI have united through years of fruitful cooperation: joint forums and congresses, work on the national project of unmanned aerial systems, and collaboration within the Advanced Engineering School,
The new Honorary Doctor was officially presented by the academic secretary of SPbPU, Dmitry Karpov.
Sergey Chernyshyov is an outstanding scientist, engineer-physicist, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, professor, and academician. His entire scientific career has been dedicated to the development of aerodynamics and multidisciplinary research of advanced aircraft, and his entire professional career—spanning 48 years—has been connected with the Central Aerohydrodynamic Institute named after the founder of hydro- and aerodynamics, one of the organizers of TsAGI, Nikolay Zhukovsky. Sergey Chernyshyov chose his profession in his youth when he became passionate about piloting sports aircraft. Today, he leads key projects at TsAGI, and his ideas served as the foundation for creating the new generation of supersonic passenger aircraft.
In 1978, Sergey Chernyshyov graduated with honors from the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology with a degree in “Aircraft.” He began working at TsAGI in the field of aircraft aerodynamics. From 1988 to 1992, he taught at the Faculty of Aerodynamics and Flight Engineering at MIPT and was deputy dean. In 1989, he graduated from the leadership school under the Ministry of Aviation Industry. Since 1998, he has been deputy director of TsAGI for foreign economic activity. Since 2007, he has been director; since 2009, executive director; from 2015 to 2018, general director of TsAGI. In 2006, Sergey Chernyshyov defended his doctoral dissertation on “Development of calculation methods and solving the problem of minimizing sonic boom during supersonic aircraft flight in a non-uniform atmosphere.” In 2010, he was awarded the title of professor. Since 2016, he has been an academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences in the Department of Energy, Mechanical Engineering, Mechanics, and Control Processes. Since 2022, he has been vice president of the RAS. Currently, he is the scientific director of TsAGI, scientific director of the Faculty of Aeromechanics and Flight Engineering at MIPT, and head of the “Flight Physics” department.Sergey Chernyshyov provides scientific leadership at TsAGI in the creation of new generation aircraft for civil, military, and special purposes. By decision of the President of the Russian Federation, he was appointed head of the priority technological area “Technologies of High-Speed Aero-Hydro-Medium Equipment.”
Aviation is an industry where literally all key areas of scientific and technological thought are actualized. And the three key scientific and technological directions fixed in the updated strategy of our university are largely closely connected with the fields of activity of Sergey Chernyshyov. Our cooperation already has its history. This includes video seminars on aeromechanics, which have been conducted since 2009 by TsAGI, Polytechnic University, the Institute of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics of the Siberian Branch of the RAS, and the Mechanics Research Institute of Moscow State University. It also includes continuous joint participation in various congress events organized or moderated by Polytechnic or TsAGI,
In November 2024, at the venue of the IV Congress of Young Scientists, a cooperation agreement was signed between SPbPU and TsAGI within the framework of the federal project “Advanced Engineering Schools,” attended by Sergey Chernyshyov. Currently, as part of an NTI Foundation grant commissioned by TsAGI, Polytechnic specialists are carrying out a three-year project “Development of technology to ensure the safe operation of composite and hybrid UAV structures under conditions of static strength considering impact forces.”
After the solemn ceremony of awarding the diploma and the mantle of Honorary Doctor of SPbPU, Sergey Chernyshyov gave a lecture to the university staff and students titled “Aviation and Astronautics: The Future Begins Today.” The scientist spoke about the changes that occurred across different generations of jet passenger aircraft, the global air transport system, and the directions of civil aviation development for the next 20 years. The lecture audience was also shown a video depicting the intensity of aircraft traffic worldwide.
Sergey Chernyshyov expressed his gratitude for receiving the title of Honorary Doctor of SPbPU: For me, Polytechnic has always been a powerful scientific school. It is very important that such system-forming organizations, both educational and scientific, operate according to high standards. Today, Polytechnic sets exactly that high standard in education and science. Many impulses come from your scientific school today, and this is the stronghold of education. I am very grateful to Andrey Ivanovich and the entire Academic Council for supporting my candidacy for the title of Honorary Doctor of the famous St. Petersburg Polytechnic. Receiving such a high title is truly a very important event in my life.
