At the Alexander Solzhenitsyn Museum-Apartment, as part of the National Unity Day, there will be a lecture prepared based on the materials of the temporary exhibition “Alexander Solzhenitsyn and Contemporary Musicians.”
Senior researcher of the museum Darya Vechernina will talk about the composer Rodion Shchedrin and his life partner, the ballerina Maya Plisetskaya.
R.K. Shchedrin, who showed musical talent early on, possessed absolute pitch and memory. Like A.I. Solzhenitsyn, who studied in Rostov-on-Don and by correspondence in Moscow, the composer entered the Moscow Conservatory simultaneously into two faculties — piano and theoretical-compositional. M.M. Plisetskaya in the same years was accepted into the Bolshoi Theatre troupe, where she worked for almost 50 years.
The future spouses met in 1955 at an evening gathering at Lilya Brik’s, and three years later got married. In her autobiography, the ballerina described in detail the atmosphere of her time, everyday difficulties, and how she maintained faith in her cause during difficult periods. In particular, in her youth she faced repression: her father was arrested and executed, then her mother was arrested. Despite this, in 1966 Maya Plisetskaya signed the “Letter of the 25” against the rehabilitation of I.V. Stalin, which also bore the names of K.I. Chukovsky, A.D. Sakharov, K.G. Paustovsky, and other outstanding cultural figures.
