In Moscow Zoo, subordinate to the metropolitan Department of Culture, a male lion-tailed macaque was born. Visitors can observe him in the exhibit of the “Primates” pavilion, and many other inhabitants can always be seen online.
The baby Zita’s mother is five years old, and this is her first offspring. She is very caring, carrying her son in her arms almost all the time, feeding him milk. While she rests, the baby is looked after by her mother Kaletta and her sister Gita. At the age of three months, the infant will become more independent and will start trying the food typical for adult animals of this species: apples, oranges, kiwis, grapes, watermelons, as well as vegetables, nuts, insects, and tree branches.
The males Kai and Raj also live in the enclosure. The entire group regularly participates in veterinary training sessions. The animals receive treats for successfully completed tasks.
The lion-tailed macaque is a rare endangered species. These primates inhabit the southwestern part of the Indian Peninsula and India. Like most macaques, they are very inventive in ways of obtaining food — they use sticks, splinters, and stones for this purpose. At the Moscow Zoo, lion-tailed macaques are regularly given toys, bottles, hoses, and other items, and the animals figure out how to use them on their own.
At the beginning of 2025, the Moscow Zoo set a world record for the number of animal species presented: at that time, it housed 1253 species. By 2026, their number approached 1280. This result was made possible thanks to the many years of work by zoologists, veterinarians, keepers, and other specialists.
