Yesterday, in the flow lecture hall building of NSU, which belongs to the facilities of the second stage of the new NSU campus, the ceremonial opening of the new 10th anniversary season of the “I am a Professional” Olympiad took place — a project of the Presidential platform “Russia – Land of Opportunity.” Over 10 years, the Olympiad has become one of the largest venues for the development of students’ professional potential: since 2017, 1.6 million participants from all regions of Russia and 147 countries worldwide have taken part.
This season features 68 directions: from engineering and IT to medicine and creative industries. Participants of the olympiad can receive cash prizes of up to 300,000 rubles, internships at 750+ of the largest Russian companies, admission to master’s, postgraduate, and residency programs without exams, as well as access to forums, schools, and career consultations.
Since 2019, Novosibirsk State University has been the organizer of the profile “Bioengineering and Bioinformatics,” which is no coincidence, as Akademgorodok is the scientific center where bioinformatics was first seriously developed in the country.
— We have always, in a good way, tried to provide the most challenging tasks possible. We have real scientists who work in research organizations and biotechnology companies creating tasks dedicated to the fields that are currently developing and that people are working on. Therefore, the knowledge we test is quite up-to-date and is not taught in all universities. Novosibirsk State University is, in a sense, such a center of crystallization, a hub for identifying talents in the field of biotechnology., — he said Sergey Sedykh, Candidate of Biological Sciences, head of the master’s program ‘Advanced Engineering Solutions for Biotechnology and Medicine’ at the Advanced Engineering School of NSU.
New opportunities for education and scientific activities are opening up at the university thanks to the construction of new campus buildings: this year, the educational and scientific center of the Institute of Medicine and Medical Technologies began operating, housing 13 practical training facilities and 10 laboratories in areas such as molecular pharmacology, metabolomics, medicinal chemistry, molecular virology and oncology, among others. Additionally, by the end of the year, a new Novosibirsk State University research center will begin functioning, with biotechnology and biomedicine as one of its priority fields. In August, the megascience installation — the SKIF Center for Collective Use — opened in the science city of Koltsovo, which will become a center for breakthrough interdisciplinary research and a magnet for scientific teams from various regions and countries.
Many students participating in the olympiad later become authors of technological projects, gain the opportunity to implement their ideas, undergo internships, and continue their careers in companies, for which the necessary infrastructure and ecosystem have been created at NSU and Akademgorodok.
— Our profile was formulated precisely so that participation in it would allow you to become a more qualified specialist. Also, many participants in the olympiads later come to us to create their own companies, submit their projects to the “Student Startup” competition. Our large, innovative ecosystem, which includes more than five hundred companies from across the country developing medical technologies, genome editing, and genetic engineering, is very pleased when young people come to us with their ideas, — emphasized Maria Galyamova, head of the HealthNet infrastructure center, director of the NSU Startup Studio.
Also, during the ceremonial opening, the rector of NSU, corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences Dmitry Pyshny presented letters of appreciation to those students who actively participated in the olympiad in the previous season. In his farewell speech, he wished them new achievements and encouraged them to move forward towards new heights despite difficulties.
This year, registration for the Olympiad will last until November 10. Students of bachelor’s, specialist’s, and master’s programs at Russian universities can participate in the project regardless of their form of study. The qualifying stage will take place from November 13 to 29, the final stage will be held from February to April 2027, and the season results will be announced in May–June 2027.
The All-Russian Student Olympiad “I am a Professional” is part of the national project “Youth and Children,” implemented by the decision of the President of Russia Vladimir Putin. The project is aimed at supporting young people, developing their professional potential, and creating conditions for self-realization.
