In the exhibition of the Moscow Zoo, subordinate to the capital’s To the Department of Culture, kea parrots have appeared — a rare tropical species. Visitors can now see these birds in the “Bird House” pavilion, whereas previously they were kept in the Moscow Region territory of the zoo — in the center for the reproduction of rare animal species.
“Four individuals of the endangered Kea parrots have settled in the exhibition area. These are young females. After completing quarantine, the birds moved to the right wing of the ‘Bird House,’ where visitors can see them. A separate aviary with swings has been equipped for these birds. The only predatory mountain parrots in the world resemble a falcon or a small eagle with a downward-curved beak. They have a noble olive coloration with blue-brown speckles. In the aviary adjacent to the Kea’s live pink cockatoos,” said Svetlana Akulova, General Director of the Moscow Zoo.
Kea live in New Zealand. They inhabit mountains, forest valleys with steep slopes, alpine meadows, and beech forests. The species is listed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature as endangered. The birds were brought to the urban zoo area at the end of 2025.
The diet of kea parrots is quite diverse. They feed not only on shoots and tubers of plants, fruits, tree leaves, and seeds, but also on insect larvae, worms, as well as chicks of other birds.
At the beginning of 2025 Moscow Zoo set a world record for the number of animal species represented: at that time it contained 1,253 species. By 2026, their number approached 1,280. Such a result was made possible thanks to many years of work by zoologists, veterinarians, keepers, and other specialists.
