Cotonou, April 16 /Xinhua/ — Romuald Wadagni won the presidential election in Benin, receiving 94.27 percent of the valid votes. This is evidenced by the preliminary voting results announced on Thursday by the Constitutional Court of Benin.

D. Vadanji won in the first round of voting, held on April 12, ahead of his moderate opposition opponent — former Minister of Culture Pol Unkpe, who received 5.73% of the votes.

The Constitutional Court of Benin, which is the highest state authority for resolving electoral disputes, declared that R. Wadani and Mariam Talata, who ran on the same ticket for the post of vice-president, received 4,575,449 votes, while Paul Unkpé and Rokh Judicaël Unvanu received 278,297 votes.

As the court clarified, a total of more than 7.89 million voters were registered for the elections, of which more than 4.85 million participated in the voting, corresponding to a turnout of 63.57%.
