Students from the capital’s colleges won nine medals at the professional competitions for young restorers. They were held as part of the fifth international exhibition “PROrestoration. Import substitution in restoration materials and technologies,” organized by By the Department of Cultural Heritage of Moscow in partnership with the Russian Association of Restorers. The competition took place from September 24 to 27 in the historic building of Ivan Sytin’s printing house. The contestants were 90 students from specialized colleges and universities of 12 regions of the country, as well as Belarus and Kazakhstan.
“Moscow was represented at the competition by 16 students from College of Architecture, Design and Reengineering No. 26 and the Educational Complex of Urban Planning ‘Capital.’ Over the course of three days, participants completed tasks based on the practice of real professionals. The young Muscovites demonstrated their abilities in 11 competencies, including the restoration of stucco, plaster, wood and stone decorations, gilded coatings, as well as metal roofing. The team earned five gold, two silver, and two bronze medals,” the press service of the city said.
Thus, students of College of Architecture, Design and Reengineering No. 26 («26 KADR») received five medals. They restored the turned wooden legs of chairs, replenished missing wooden parts of paintings made with tempera paints on boards, recreated the finish coating of a pointed window in a sloped roof, made a limestone base for a pilaster for a temple, and restored lost fragments of frescoes.
“I am very glad to have won in such a prestigious competition. This year’s task was quite extensive. My teammates and I demonstrated the skills we learned at college. The competitors were strong, so the victory is especially significant. The jury members praised our work, and that always inspires us to try even harder,” shared Tatiana Polyakova, a fourth-year student at the “26 KADR” college.
Young specialists of the educational complex of urban planning “Capital” won four awards. The young masters sanded, primed, and painted stucco decor, compiled brief descriptions of the preservation status of objects, and created damage maps.
Third-year student of the urban planning education complex “Stolitsa,” Alexander Altantsev, noted that preparing for the competition took several weeks. The young man believes that the hardest part of the restorer’s work is maintaining authenticity: it is necessary to restore lost elements while adhering as closely as possible to the plasticity of the historical specimen. His classmate Anna Dromanova added that the high evaluation from the jury was especially important to her. The student is just beginning her path in restoration, so the opinion of experienced specialists helps her grow and develop.
The participants’ works were evaluated by a professional jury, which included masters, teachers, and honorary restorers. The young people were given prizes provided by the contest sponsors — professional tools and restoration materials.
In addition, students and teachers of the “26 FRAME” college participated in the business program of the exhibition. The students demonstrated how to remove layers from surfaces, recreate traditional painting on household items, restore stucco ornament on picture frames, and assemble a model of an antique chair. College teacher Nikolay Frizin conducted a master class on constructing a Russian log house from wooden blocks.
Last year, students from the “26 KADR” college and the “Stolitsa” urban planning educational complex won nine awards at the “PROrestoration” exhibition.
