Deputy Foreign Minister of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea Kim Song Gyon, speaking on Monday at the general political debates of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, stated that the DPRK’s status as a nuclear-armed state “cannot be reversed under any circumstances or by any means.”

According to him, this status is “physically and legally” firmly established. North Korea, he added, will continue to control external threats relying on its “overwhelming superior force” and carry out, in his words, the mission of a “responsible nuclear-armed state.”

Military tension
Kim Sung-kyun accused the United States and its allies of escalating tensions on the Korean Peninsula. According to him, the US is turning the military alliance with Japan and the Republic of Korea into a “more offensive and aggressive military bloc with a nuclear element,” updating nuclear war scenarios against the DPRK and practicing them during military exercises, including Freedom Shield and Freedom Edge. He also stated that the deployment of new missiles and drones in the region further complicates the security situation.
A representative of the DPRK sharply criticized Japan, calling it a “Class A war criminal.” He accused Tokyo of accelerating rearmament, mentioning a possible revision of the pacifist constitution, a departure from the principle of an “exclusively defensive” policy, reforming the military structure, and increasing armaments. Separately, he pointed to Japan’s development of “counterattack capabilities” and long-range means capable of striking targets in neighboring countries. According to Kim Song Gyon, the absence of armed conflict on the Korean Peninsula is explained by the DPRK’s possession of powerful deterrent potential.
Reliance on one’s own strength
Speaking about the situation inside the country, the deputy head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the five-year plan for national economic development was successfully completed, and the production base was strengthened. According to him, in the conditions of the pandemic, abnormal weather phenomena, geopolitical confrontation, and the associated economic crisis, the DPRK consistently adhered to the principle of relying on its own strengths. Kim Song Gyong stated that this approach has strengthened the country’s resilience, and self-sufficiency is, in the view of the DPRK leadership, “the most reliable shortest path to prosperity.”
UN Reform
Kim Sung-gyun also called for UN reform, stating that the Organization must equally represent the views and interests of all member states and not be used by individual countries for political purposes. “The time has come for the UN to undertake reform,” he said, advocating for its “democratization.” According to him, the era when one country could impose its will on the rest of the world is passing, and multilateralism and multipolarity are becoming the defining trends in international relations.
