In recent weeks, as a result of continuous attacks by the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation across Ukraine, many civilians, including children, have been killed and injured. This was stated today by the UN Humanitarian Coordinator for Ukraine, Matthias Schmale.
“Homes, schools, medical institutions, enterprises, and other civilian infrastructure were damaged or destroyed in Kyiv, Dnipro, Kharkiv, Odesa, Sumy, and Zaporizhzhia, as well as in other cities and regions,” the statement says.
According to Schmale, on Monday a medical center in the center of Kyiv was hit, and a fire broke out in the building of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine due to an attack – people were trapped inside. In Dnipro, he continued, a business center was damaged, and there are injured civilians.
“Everyday life is becoming increasingly dangerous for civilians at any time of the day. Going to school, commuting to work, shopping, seeking medical care, or spending time at home is often no longer as safe as it should be,” warned the UN representative.
For many families, he noted, hours-long air raid alarms, explosions, the need to take shelter, and disruption of the usual way of life have become part of everyday reality. Children cannot stay in classrooms for hours, and residents repeatedly face uncertainty, fear, and loss.
“We must not allow violence, disruption of the usual order, and fear to become the accepted reality of everyday life,” emphasized Schmale.
He reminded that international humanitarian law requires protecting civilians and civilian infrastructure and prohibits strikes against them.
