On the territory of the eco-center “Ekoshkola Kus-kovo,” subordinate to the metropolitan Department of Environmental Management and Protection, discovered a bicolored bat. This species of bat is listed in the Moscow Red Book under the first category of rarity.
The two-colored leather bat got its name due to its unusual coloring. The fur on its back is dark brown at the base and silvery-white at the tips, making it appear frost-covered. It is a medium-sized bat: the body length is 6–7 centimeters, wingspan about 30 centimeters, and weight ranges from eight to 20 grams.
Two-colored leather bats inhabit forests and steppes, and are also found in cities. For shelter, they often choose cracks in buildings, spaces behind wall paneling, and other hard-to-reach places. At dusk and night, bats hunt above bodies of water, forest edges, and open areas, catching mosquitoes, moths, and other small insects. In this way, they help regulate the population of invertebrates.
During seasonal migrations, bats may accidentally enter residential premises. To avoid unwanted encounters, it is recommended not to leave windows open unattended, and when airing out, use curtains or mosquito nets. If an animal has gotten into the apartment, you should close the doors to adjacent rooms and open a window so it can exit on its own. Do not handle it with bare hands, pet, feed, or try to tame it.
If a bat does not leave the premises or appears to be injured, you should contact the Moscow Government’s unified information service by phone: +7 495 777-77-77. Specialists will advise on how to act in such a situation.
