Ankara, April 15 /Xinhua/ — The number of people killed as a result of a shooting that occurred on Wednesday at one of the schools in the city of Kahramanmaraş in southern Turkey has risen to nine, including eight students. This was reported by a number of media outlets citing the Turkish Minister of Internal Affairs, Mustafa Çiftçi.

Earlier that same day, the governor of Kahramanmaraş province, Mükerrrem Ünlüer, stated that at least four people died and 20 were injured as a result of the incident that occurred around 13:30 local time / 10:30 GMT in the middle school “Ayser Çalık” in the Onikishubat district. An eighth-grade student opened fire in two classrooms.

According to the latest data from the local NTV channel, the attacker committed suicide by shooting himself during the commotion.

The governor told journalists at the scene of the incident that the attacker, whose target was students of the fifth grades, carried out the attack while possessing five units of firearms and seven magazines.

According to information from several media outlets, the weapon used by him presumably belonged to his father Ugur Mersinli, a former police officer who is currently detained.
