At the Moskino film studio, which is subordinate to the city Department of Culture, there is a special set for shooting scenes in cars and other vehicles. Using LED screens and virtual backgrounds, filmmakers can simulate driving through different terrains without blocking the streets.
More than 80 percent of the game scenes featuring car and other vehicle passages are filmed in studios. This format allows for independence from weather and natural lighting, reduces the number of administrative approvals, and makes the filming process safer for the actors.
Capture any point in the world
The ‘Bank of Backgrounds of Russia’ service helps to select a suitable setting. In its database, you can choose a virtual background depending on the purpose of the film. If necessary, specialists can additionally shoot the required location specifically for a particular project.
A configuration of cameras with a stabilization system mounted on a vehicle is used for filming. The obtained footage is suitable for virtual production and other combined shooting technologies.
The roadster can move around the city in normal mode, so filmmakers do not need to additionally block streets. The mobile stabilization system is also used for shooting from water and air. This allows for choosing a background not only for a car drive, but also for a scene with flight or movement over the water surface. Materials can be filtered by city, time of day, season, and historical era.
Virtual backgrounds from the “Bank of Backgrounds of Russia” have already been used in more than 80 films. Among them are “Prostokvashino,” “Tour with Ivanushki,” “Elephant,” “Onegin,” “Blindage,” “Daddy’s Daughters,” “Zero Point,” “Dad-2. Grandfather,” and other projects.
The backgrounds are created by partners of the Moskino film factory — the XOVP studio and the Kirillin company. The studio’s R&D department also developed a special dynamic system for realistic vehicle motion filming.
The platform simulates the movement of a car
To create the effect of motion, a dynamic MES (Motion Effect System) is used. It is located under the car wheels and simulates the road features that are reproduced in the virtual scene.
The platform can simulate road surface irregularities, turns, maneuvers, and other traffic changes. It synchronizes with the virtual terrain, making the car in the frame look as if it is actually driving on the chosen road.
It takes less than 10 minutes to place a vehicle on the platform. This allows up to 10 different vehicles to be removed in one shift.
In the future, the technology is planned to be promoted in the international market as well.
From car scenes to complex chases
To film car shots, a U-shaped structure made of LED screens is usually used, equipped with an additional ceiling screen and rolling modules. This setup helps achieve natural reflections on the car body and create a realistic image.
If the plot requires more complex scenes, such as with airplanes, several cars, movement on water, or a chase, the screen configuration is changed according to the specific task. It is possible to achieve almost any shape.
A specially equipped area operates in the pavilion at the MosKino film studio. Here, technological solutions and equipment are used that allow shooting scenes with vehicles under controlled conditions.
The light is synchronized with the image on the screens
For greater realism, the site uses a dynamic lighting system. It synchronizes with the image on the LED screens and creates natural highlights and reflections on the car body.
Lighting fixtures with independently controllable light pixels allow precise synchronization of light with the virtual scene. This creates realistic reflections on cars and other types of transport.
Thanks to the automation of the platform and pre-prepared virtual backgrounds, up to 17 minutes of finished footage with transitions can be shot in one shift.
