At the Saint Petersburg Peter the Great Polytechnic University, another cycle of open lectures for schoolchildren has been completed. The events are aimed at developing interest in physics and mathematics. The lectures have become an important part of the university’s career guidance work. Every year, they help high school students become more familiar with the university atmosphere, the scientific approach, and the content of disciplines beyond the school curriculum.

Open lectures on physics are not just additional lessons, but real scientific meetings, in which the laws of nature are clearly demonstrated. The idea is that schoolchildren should see with their own eyes what textbooks often describe only theoretically.

Last year, an open lecture was held for students of grades 9–10 and was dedicated to mathematics, specifically the topic “Trigonometry”. The lecture was conducted by the head of the Higher Mathematics Department, Ilya Sysoev.

Schoolchildren listened to a lecture about the basic trigonometric functions and their graphs, as well as about how they are applied in modern science — from engineering to computer graphics. Then the children practiced solving inequalities with trigonometric expressions, analyzed several complex problems, and learned to find non-standard solutions for trigonometric equations.

Such programs allow schoolchildren to “try on” the role of a SPbPU student, communicate with the best teachers and immerse themselves in a unique scientific atmosphere, unavailable in regular lessons. They already help make a confident step towards a profession, and to the Polytechnic University — to support a new generation of engineers and researchers whose ideas and discoveries will define our future.
