Two European roe deer fawns born in June this year at the eco-center “Doe’s House” capital Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection, received names. They were chosen by young Muscovites during survey on the platform “Active Citizen — for Children”. Children aged six to fourteen participated in it.

Experts proposed five names for the fawn with white spots and six for its reddish-furred counterpart. All the options were carefully considered: each name reflected the external features or behaviors of the youngsters. Some referred to the coat color, others to character traits, and others to symbolic images connected with nature. This approach allowed the young participants not only to choose a catchy name but also to better understand the characteristics of these graceful animals.

According to the survey results, the red deer fawn was named Ogonyok — this option was supported by 30 percent of participants. The name is associated not only with the color of the animal but also with bright light and warmth, which symbolize the life energy and activity of the little one. The competitors for this option were the names Ryzhik, Yantar, Nosik, Bezhka, and Malysh.

For the fawn with spots on its back, young Muscovites chose the name Pyatnashka, which was liked by 38 percent of respondents. Among the suggested names were also Dymka, Zhemchug, Buytur, and Ostroukh.

European roe deer are not found in the wild in Moscow and the Moscow region, so the birth of fawns in the enclosure complex of the eco-center is an important event for the specialists. The little ones are still very timid and are getting accustomed near their mothers, but visitors can already see them from a distance. The staff of the “Roe Deer House” ask to maintain silence and not to frighten the young animals with loud noises.

Choosing names for the fawns on the “Active Citizen — for children” platform has become a good tradition. Last year, the children helped decide the name for another European roe deer baby, who was born on Russia Day — June 12. The young Muscovites named him Rosinka.
