In the entrances of the Moscow metro, second doors that were temporarily dismantled for the summer period have begun to be installed. By mid-November, more than six thousand doors will be restored at the station. This will help retain heat at the entrances, reduce heat loss, and minimize drafts during the cold season.

“The Moscow Metro prepares in advance for every cold season. First of all, we reinstall the second doors in the vestibules, then check the air curtains, switch the ventilation and climate systems on trains to winter mode. This allows maintaining a comfortable temperature at stations and inside the trains even when it gets colder outside. On a weekday, there are eight million trips made on the metro, so it is important for us that the infrastructure operates stably and predictably at any time of the year,” said the Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Transport and Industry.

Maxim Liksutov.

In the summer, when the second doors are not in use, specialists conduct their diagnostics, eliminate chips and cracks if necessary, update the paint coating, and replace worn and damaged parts. This helps to keep the structures in good condition and prepare them for operation in the autumn-winter period.

The metropolitan subway is prepared for the cold season every autumn so that with the onset of cold weather the infrastructure continues to operate stably, and passengers’ trips remain comfortable and predictable.

Later, with the onset of cold weather, specialists will switch the tunnel ventilation and climate control systems in the metro trains to winter mode, which will operate taking into account low temperatures. This will help maintain a comfortable temperature both at the stations and inside the trains.

All metro stations are also equipped with air-thermal curtains. They create a stream of warm air that forms an additional barrier between the indoor space and the cold air from outside, which reduces heat loss.
