Top news of the day at the UN and worldwide: strikes on civilian targets in Ukraine, at least three civilians killed in an attack in Afghanistan, ongoing Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia, UN scientific group on AI presented an analysis of the Hugging Face hack.
Strikes on Ukraine
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reports that as a result of strikes over the past weekend and on Monday in several regions of Ukraine, civil infrastructure facilities, including residential buildings, shops, warehouses, agricultural facilities, administrative and educational institutions, as well as energy infrastructure facilities, were damaged or destroyed. Humanitarian agencies are providing emergency assistance to those affected. “The Secretary-General is deeply concerned and alarmed at the escalation of the conflict, during which, as we see, strikes have been carried out on a number of civilian objects both on the territory of the Russian Federation and Ukraine,” the UN press service said today.
Victims in Afghanistan
The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) confirmed that as a result of airstrikes carried out this morning in Kunar province, at least three civilians—a man, a woman, and a girl—were killed, and four others were wounded. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reports that the Barmal district in Paktika province was also subjected to airstrikes; according to available information, residential homes were damaged. Since the beginning of the year, UNAMA has recorded more than 1,100 cases of civilian deaths and injuries in Afghanistan due to cross-border armed clashes.
The situation in the Middle East
The UN has once again condemned the ongoing Houthis attacks on Saudi Arabia, including an attempt to strike the capital city Riyadh. The organization remains concerned about the military escalation in and around Yemen, including the Houthis’ offensive in several provinces of the country, which has serious consequences for the civilian population. The UN Special Envoy for Yemen, Hans Grundberg, is in Muscat, where he is holding meetings with Omani officials and representatives of the Houthis.
AI Regulation
An independent international UN scientific group on artificial intelligence has called for a review of safety measures after AI agents hacked Hugging Face – an online platform for developing and testing artificial intelligence models. In their first analytical note, the group of experts stated that the security breach was caused by a combination of several key risk factors. This incident has heightened concerns that in the future humans may lose the ability to control, limit, or stop AI systems from operating.
