Recently, the 2026 Goldfish Culture Festival was held in Zhongshan Park (Sun Yat-sen Park) in Beijing. More than 80 breeds and over 1,800 selected goldfish were exhibited – making the scale and quality of the exhibition the largest in the entire history of the festival.

Zhongshan Park has a long-standing tradition of breeding goldfish: they began to be raised and exhibited as early as 1915, making the park the first in the country where goldfish were publicly displayed.

In old Beijing, there was a long-standing tradition of admiring goldfish: in former times, a “sunshade, a tub with goldfish, and a pomegranate tree” in a siheyuan courtyard were familiar and cozy elements of ordinary family life. The Jinyuichi area (Goldfish Pond), located next to the Temple of Heaven Park, was the main place for breeding goldfish in the capital.

In Beijing, the goldfish is not just a decorative fish, but a true “living monument in water,” carrying hundreds of years of palace culture, folk memory, and the spirit of craftsmanship.
