At the International Youth Festival in Yekaterinburg, Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Patrushev delivered a lecture on the topic “Russia’s contribution to ensuring global food security” as part of the federal educational marathon “Knowledge.First” organized by the Russian Society “Knowledge”.
“Our country is a major producer of wheat, barley, potatoes, milk, meat, fish, and other products. For certain types, our self-sufficiency significantly exceeds consumption. This means that Russia has the ability to strengthen the food security of partner countries. We take this role very seriously. Despite any challenges, agricultural raw materials and food from Russia are represented in 160 countries. That is more than two-thirds of the world,” said Dmitry Patrushev.
The Deputy Prime Minister spoke about the formation of the Russian agro-industrial complex in the early 2000s, the emergence of sectoral state programs, and the first national project. Dmitry Patrushev paid special attention to the period since 2014. With large-scale state support, production growth has exceeded 30% since then.
After the introduction of the food embargo, entire sectors of agriculture were rebuilt from scratch. Among them are greenhouse vegetable growing and meat livestock farming. Turkey production was also built from scratch, and today Russia ranks second in this niche. Cheese production has doubled, and its assortment already includes more than 9,000 varieties. Moreover, Russian winemaking, thanks to the support of the President of Russia, is experiencing a real flourishing – investments are coming in, the scientific base is developing, and modern technologies are being implemented.
Domestic products are very popular worldwide due to their high quality and excellent taste.
“Russia is now firmly becoming one of the key global food suppliers. Our agricultural exports in recent years amount to around 100 million tons, with their value exceeding 40 billion dollars. Our country has established itself as a reliable and stable partner, helping other states ensure food security. Russia holds leading positions in the supply of certain types of goods,” noted the Deputy Prime Minister.
Thus, every fifth exported ton of wheat on the global market is of domestic origin. Russia is a leader in the export of sunflower and rapeseed oils. The share of Russian imports in certain countries reaches up to 100%.
Russia confidently maintains its position among the top five countries leading in the extraction of aquatic biological resources. Each year, our fishermen catch about 5 million tons. Thanks to this, approximately 2 million tons of fish products are exported to foreign markets.
Dmitry Patrushev spoke about how agrotechnologies are developing in our country, which allow increasing the resilience of agriculture. Based on last year’s results, exports of Russian fertilizers, seeds, animal vaccines, and biotechnological products abroad exceeded 16 billion dollars.
In addition, dozens of Russian agricultural universities train specialists in demand for the industry. Among the most interesting specialties are bioengineer, geneticist-breeder, agrocyberneticist, agrodrones operator, precision farming specialist, and manager of agrotourism ecosystems.
Speaking about the future, Dmitry Patrushev emphasized that over the next decade the global agricultural sector will continue to grow. Moreover, about 80% of the increase in crop production should come from improved yields. The main task is to unlock the natural potential of crops and livestock, including through the development of new varieties, modern forms of fertilizers and plant protection products, and the improvement of feed.
The Deputy Prime Minister specifically noted that substitute products are gaining popularity today. Nevertheless, our country has great potential and all the resources to increase the production of traditional products with the necessary nutrients.
In conclusion of his speech, Dmitry Patrushev noted the hard work of employees in the Russian agro-industrial complex – today, this is almost 6.5 million people.
As part of the International Youth Festival, the Deputy Prime Minister also viewed the exhibition “Source of Life,” which showcases Russia’s natural wealth, as well as advanced technologies that enable the development of the agro-industrial complex. In addition, products of Russian manufacturing are presented at the stand.
