In K.A. Timiryazev State Biological Museum, subordinate to the capital’s Department of Culture, on September 16, the annual series of cut flower exhibitions “Flowers of Our Gardens” will come to an end. The Museum organized it jointly with the “Moscow Florists” club. Guests of the event at Malaya Gruzinskaya Street (building 15) will find an extensive collection of pelargoniums, and the highlight this year will be the zonal pelargonium — the most popular and numerous group, with more than 75,000 varieties worldwide.
“Flowers of Our Gardens”
Exhibitions from the “Flowers of Our Gardens” series annually attract interest from both gardeners and the general public. Numerous and very diverse flowers, from lilies to hydrangeas, bloom right before the eyes of visitors and complement the main exhibition. The primary goal of such exhibitions is to showcase the diversity of modern breeding. Additionally, visitors can receive consultations and purchase seeds of their favorite species from professional gardeners.
This year, from May to August, the exhibition “Flowers of Our Gardens” was seen by over five thousand people. The plants were displayed mainly in the main building of the K.A. Timiryazev State Biological Museum on Malaya Gruzinskaya Street (house 15), as well as in the “Biocluster,” in pavilion No. 31 “Geology.”
Amazing pelargoniums
Pelargonium, which in Russia is traditionally often called geranium, consistently ranks among the top ten most popular houseplants according to florists’ surveys. However, as experts explain, pelargonium and geranium are still different plants. Their external similarity is explained by belonging to the geranium family, but their origin and climate preferences differ. Geranium comes from temperate zones and overwinters in Russian gardens. Pelargonium came to Europe from South Africa and will not survive the cold in the open ground of the temperate zone. In summer, it can be taken outdoors, but in autumn it must be returned to a warm room.
Zonal pelargonium received its name due to a characteristic feature of its leaves. On their surface, there is a so-called zone of a different color. It can appear as a distinct ring or a blurred spot in the center of the leaf blade. The brightness can vary depending on the season and the intensity of illumination, making each specimen unique.
The palette of pelargonium flower shades is very wide — from matte pure white to rich carmine red, from delicate pink to deep purple. In some varieties, the leaves have an unusual pattern and color, which can become a bright accent in a garden composition or interior even without blooming.
On September 16, visitors will not only be able to admire cut flowers but also interact with collectors from the “Moscow Floriculturists” club. Experienced experts will provide consultations on growing pelargoniums. They will explain the nuances of care, proper watering, fertilization, bush shaping, as well as how to achieve abundant and prolonged flowering. Additionally, everyone interested will have a unique opportunity to enrich their own home collection with plants grown by club members. The event can be attended by to the entrance ticket to the museum.
The State Biological Museum named after K.A. Timiryazev was founded in 1922 by Boris Zavadovsky, an academician and a leading specialist in physiology, endocrinology, and biology. The main exhibition is located in the former estate of Petr Shchukin on Malaya Gruzinskaya Street.
Since the beginning of the 20th century, the museum has been a leading interactive problem-thematic platform showcasing all branches of biology. Its collections include over 110,000 exhibits. Among them are unique anthropological reconstructions, zoological collections from renowned domestic naturalists, and much more.
