Jinan, September 14 /Xinhua/ — Recalling a recent trip to the city of Weihai /Shandong Province, East China/, a young woman named Lisa from Russia is still deeply impressed. A sheet of red paper, transformed under scissors into an elegant pattern, became an unforgettable cultural experience for her.

Russia is a key market for inbound tourism, which the Shandong Province is actively developing, and the potential for cultural and tourism cooperation between the parties is immense. This year, Shandong Province allocated 20 million yuan, primarily aimed at incentivizing travel agencies to attract inbound tourists, organize charter flights, and conduct marketing abroad.

The CEO of the travel company “Quancai,” Wang Wenchao, reported: “This year, we organized the ‘Weihai Trip’ event for a group of a hundred young participants of the educational tour from Russian sister cities, and for the inbound tourism market during the summer period, we offered 7- and 14-day in-depth tourism routes.”

Previously, due to limited time, language barriers, and transport inconveniences, most Russian tourists could only take superficial excursions and found it difficult to immerse themselves in the local culture.

To allow inbound tourists to gain a deeper understanding of the local culture, the Weihai Center for Folk Art regularly demonstrates techniques such as Xixian (tin inlay), Jianzhi (paper cutting), Juyi (metal clasping of ceramics), and other crafts. Tourists can not only observe the process but also try making something with their own hands.

Having tried making jiaozi /dumplings/ for the first time in Weihai, a participant of the Russian youth educational and cultural group Anya said: “I am very glad that I was able to learn this way of preparing food. Returning to Russia, I want to try making it myself once again.”

Shandong not only aims to attract inbound tourists but also pays special attention to winning their hearts through “hospitality service,” creating a favorable market development cycle based on reputation.

In Shandong, many hotels and tourist sites have added signs in Russian and are attracting Russian-speaking volunteers to assist with translation.

Local tour operators are also increasing investments in transport capacity to fully accommodate the inbound flow of Russian tourists. “Since June 27 this year, we have consecutively opened two charter inbound tourist routes from the Russian cities of Vladivostok and Khabarovsk to Shandong. Our products and tourist routes cover Jinan, Qingdao, Yantai, Weihai, Qufu, and other cities, providing tourists with more choices,” said Wang Wenchao. -0-
