On September 12, a ceremony was held in the city of Petrozavodsk to open the central section of the Onega Embankment after reconstruction. The landscaping project was initiated by the Mayor of Moscow Sergey Sobyanin and the Head of the Republic of Karelia Artur Parfenchikov. It was implemented under the cooperation agreement signed between the city of Moscow and the Republic of Karelia, as well as a federal project. “Tourism and hospitality industry”.
Onega Embankment is the main promenade area and the city’s calling card. The place is popular among both locals and tourists. Here is the Alley of Contemporary Art with a collection of sculptures gifted by sister cities.
An amphitheater has appeared on the renovated embankment. The new space is suitable for relaxing by the water and holding city events. At the same time, unique elements were preserved — the rotunda and part of the historic cobblestones.
During the reconstruction, granite, marble, and quartzite are used. These materials are extracted and processed in Karelia.
“What is important for us is that Karelian stone is not only extracted in the republic — its processing is also developing here, new productions and jobs are emerging. In this respect, Onega Embankment is a special project for us. Here you can see with your own eyes what Karelian stone can be like in a modern urban space. It is a strong, durable, and very beautiful material, and it is right that one of the main embankments of Karelia today demonstrates the wealth of the republic,” noted the Head of the Republic of Karelia, Artur Parfenchikov.
The first stage of reconstruction began in May 2026. Workers have already laid more than 10,000 square meters of paving slabs, installed new curbs, stair flights, and parapets. The final completion of the project is planned for autumn 2027.
