Beijing, April 14 /Xinhua/ — In the first quarter of 2026, the number of entries into China and exits from it by people through the border checkpoints of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region (Northwest China) amounted to 1.03 million person-times, and 396 thousand vehicles were inspected and passed through on both sides. Both indicators increased respectively by 25.3% and 20.8% year-on-year, reported the daily newspaper “Xinjiang Daily” citing data from the local border control service.

In January-March of this year, the number of foreigners entering the territory of China through the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region (XPPR) under the visa-free regime amounted to 181 thousand person-times or more than 70% of the total, having increased by 34.9% on an annual basis.

The significant growth of the above-mentioned indicators became possible thanks to a number of factors, including the introduction of a visa-free regime, the continuous improvement of the international air route network, the renewal and enhancement of equipment and infrastructure used for customs clearance, as well as adjustment and optimization of the customs control process.

Since the beginning of the current year, the main border control service in Xinjiang, focusing efforts on the implementation of the “36 measures aimed at ensuring a high level of openness and high-quality development of Xinjiang,” has been continuously optimizing customs clearance services, including the experimental introduction of a round-the-clock operation mode at the Horgos and Irkeshtam vehicle checkpoints, as well as a working schedule at the Turgat checkpoint, where the border crossing operates daily, with a working day duration of 14 hours.

“An increasing number of foreigners come to Xinjiang for tourism or business purposes, a significant portion of them being citizens of Central Asian countries,” the border control service of Urumqi city reported, adding that this service opens additional channels during peak passenger flow and constantly promotes the formation of an intellectual border control system in order to reduce waiting times during customs control.
