On September 12, in the “Business. Technograd” pavilion at VDNH, the “UMKA” team from the GUU project “Young Innovators,” led by Artem Nikitin, will showcase a unique development in the field of ecology.
Artem is only 15 years old, but he has already assembled a team and created a device that has entered the top 100 promising projects of the Moscow Government’s acceleration program “Academy of Innovators” and the top 10 best startups to participate in the demo day at VDNH.
The guys created the smart bin “UMKA,” which independently sorts garbage using artificial intelligence. Its operation principle is simple and effective: a camera captures an image of the waste, a neural network classifies the object based on a trained model, and a servo brings the sorting mechanism to the required position, after which the garbage goes into one of four compartments.
The prototype of the invention was presented in February 2026 at the United Nations Atlantic-Pacific Forum on Sustainable Development in Bangkok. The developers have already become winners of the educational course “Innovatics” from Skoltech, absolute winners of the project competition at the scientific-practical conference “SkolStart”, residents of the MSU Science Park, received a certificate of intellectual property registration, and in September opened a legal entity LLC “Technologies of the Future”.
In addition, during this time the guys conducted three pilot tests at major venues – at the State University of Management, at the Skolkovo International Gymnasium, and at the Rudnevo Industrial Park.
