Escalation in the Strait of Hormuz
The UN Secretary-General is concerned about reports of further escalation in and around the Strait of Hormuz in recent days, including attacks on commercial vessels and threats of further actions targeting maritime and energy infrastructure. Navigation rights and freedom of navigation must be fully restored and respected in accordance with international law, the UN emphasizes. António Guterres strongly urges the parties to make full use of diplomatic channels and resolve their differences through negotiations.
Attacks on the education system
The scale of armed conflicts worldwide continues to grow, and along with it, the number of attacks on educational institutions is increasing at an alarming rate. The United Nations has warned about this on the occasion of the International Day to Protect Education from Attack. In 2025, there were 1,680 such attacks recorded worldwide—a 33 percent increase compared to the previous year. In particular, according to UN data at the end of 2025, since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, 1,611 schools in Ukraine have been damaged or destroyed, with at least 339 completely destroyed.
Human rights in Afghanistan
UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk called for pressure to be exerted on the de facto authorities of Afghanistan to comply with international obligations. According to him, repressive measures are tightening every month. The UN’s top human rights official expressed regret over the bans that seriously restrict Afghan women and girls’ access to education and the labor market, freedom of movement, participation in public life, as well as exclude them from decision-making structures.
UN Secretary-General to speak at BRICS summit
The UN Secretary-General will participate in the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi, India. António Guterres will speak at an open session dedicated to inclusive global growth, which will take place on September 13. The UN chief is expected to emphasize the need to create new and reform existing multilateral institutions – including the Bretton Woods system and the Security Council. The Secretary-General also has a series of bilateral meetings planned with summit leaders, including Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
