On September 8, the exhibition “Architectural Graphics: From Classics to Modernity” opened in the exhibition hall of the Faculty of Architecture at SPbGASU. The exhibition features the best student works created as part of the study of the discipline “Architectural Graphics” over the past several years.
The exhibition is organized by the Department of History and Theory of Architecture with the participation of associate professors of the department Igor Khramov, Alexander Ponomaryov, Nikita Igolkin and associate professor of the Department of Architectural Design Vladlena Lyavdanskogo.
The exhibition includes works by students from various courses and fields of study. The authors were given the opportunity to independently choose the topics and methods of their artistic execution. Among the presented works are architectural sketches from life, pieces dedicated to specific buildings and architectural objects, term projects, as well as graphic compositions in which students were able to express their own creative vision.
As the instructors noted, one of the main goals of the course is to give students the opportunity to find their own language of architectural graphics. Some focus on working with line and form, others prefer tonal graphics or color. At the same time, the ability to imagine and create expressive artistic images plays an important role.
“Some are skilled in tonal graphics, others are masters of color. Please, express yourself!” the instructors emphasized while talking about the idea of the exhibition.
Special attention at the opening was given to the significance of manual drawing in the profession of an architect. According to the instructors, it is precisely working with one’s hands that helps a future specialist develop their own professional and artistic thinking.
“No graphics, no hands. In the senior courses, hands are what create the image. Through the hands, our brain creates the image. And this is important for our discipline – to activate this chain,” the exhibition organizers noted.
Moreover, according to the teachers, working on graphic works allows students not only to master artistic skills but also to develop their own worldview, learn to analyze the architectural environment, and cultivate an individual creative stance.
“Behind every work is a whole world. The entire worldview of the author, their philosophical understanding of the theme, which is conveyed to you here,” noted one of the organizers.
At the opening, they also spoke about the department’s methodological work. Under the leadership of Igor Khramov, a methodological guide on architectural graphics was prepared, which comprehensively presents the history of architectural graphics development and various techniques for working with it. The publication was awarded a diploma from the Academy of Construction Sciences.
The organizers expressed their gratitude to the students whose works were included in the exhibition, as well as to everyone who participated in the preparation of the exhibition. It was specifically noted that not all of the works completed by the students could be included in the exhibition due to the large amount of material. According to the organizers, the exhibition aims not only to showcase the best works within the discipline of architectural graphics but also to pass on experience to the new generation of students. The organizers expressed hope that the exhibition would become an annual tradition of the architecture faculty and inspire junior students to strive for new creative achievements. “This is a wonderful opportunity for the new generation to aim higher, to strive to do even better,” noted Nikita Igolkin.
