Today is the first celebration of the Day of the Languages of the Peoples of Russia, established by the Presidential Decree of November 4, 2025.
Dear friends!
I congratulate you on the Day of the Languages of the Peoples of Russia.
It is symbolic that this holiday is celebrated on the birthday of Rasul Gamzatov – a poet, prose writer, publicist, and social figure. A true patriot of our country, he made a huge contribution to the preservation of the Avar language, praised Dagestan in his poetry, and created beautiful poems, many of which became songs. His work embodies the heroic deeds of the soldiers of the Great Patriotic War, love for the Motherland, and for the native language.
The diversity of cultures, traditions, and customs is one of the main riches of our country. More than one hundred and ninety peoples live in Russia, speaking almost three hundred languages and dialects. They are passed down from generation to generation, serving as a unique means of communication and cohesion among people.
Preservation, support, and development of the languages of the peoples is one of the priorities of state policy. Today, seventy-six languages are taught in the country’s schools, kindergartens, colleges, and universities, including those of indigenous small-numbered peoples. Educational and cultural events are held, films are made, and plays are performed.
On this festive day, I want to express my gratitude to scientists, teachers, writers, and cultural figures. To everyone who preserves Russia’s unique linguistic heritage.
I wish you new successes and achievements for the benefit of the Fatherland and our citizens.
