Autumn weekends are an opportunity to spend time away from household chores. Unique opportunities for enjoyable leisure are offered to city residents by museums subordinate to the capital’s Department of Culture. Thus, on September 12, poetry, cinema, and walking enthusiasts are invited to a themed program at V.V. Mayakovsky State Museum. Guests are awaited by lectures on literature and cinema, a tour through the capital’s alleys, and the opportunity to see the life and work of the famous poet from a new perspective.

Reading with Mayakovsky. Secrets of 1920s literature and “Autumn Dream”
“To throw Pushkin, Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, and so on and so forth overboard from the steamboat of modernity” — that was the slogan of the futurists, one of whom was Vladimir Mayakovsky. But what did the avant-gardists really reject? In Mayakovsky’s poetry, there are many allusions to classical literature, which formed a complex system of thematic, motif, and image resonances. So what did the author himself read? Which writers influenced him? Answers to these questions can be found in his library. The museum houses books that belonged to the poet and the Brik couple, editions from the family archive.
You can get acquainted with rare copies and personal volumes at the meeting reading groups, supporting the joint reading format. Guests are awaited on September 12 at 14:30 in the Mayakovsky family’s apartment in Studenetsky Lane (building 6, apartment 20). The program includes reading and discussing books from Vladimir Mayakovsky’s library. Participants will not only study editions from his collection but also look for connections with the poet’s work. During the reading, they will get acquainted with the intellectual currents of the 1920s and explore the contexts of early Soviet culture.
The meeting will include a discussion of Elena Guro’s book “Autumn Sleep.” The reading group leader is Timur Khairulin, Deputy Director for Museum Activities at the V.V. Mayakovsky State Museum.
Walking with Mayakovsky. Secrets of the Revenue House
By revealing the secrets of literary movements, you can go for a walk. At 3:30 PM, everyone interested is invited to a walking tour. Using the example of house 36 on Krasnaya Presnya, where the Mayakovsky family rented an apartment from 1913 to 1915, participants will be told about income houses of the early 20th century, as well as about the poet’s family’s daily life and details of the urban lifestyle of that time — from daily routines to relationships with neighbors. The walk will be interesting for listeners over 12 years old.
Watching with Mayakovsky. Western, comedy, and other genres
Citizens are invited to learn many new things at the venue of the “Apartment on Bolshaya Presnya” museum (Krasnaya Presnya Street, building 36, structure 1, apartment 24). At 17:00, a lecture by Galina Antipova will begin there “Mayakovsky and American Cinema of the 1920s”. Visitors will talk about the poet’s travels and his impressions of films shot in the USA, as well as movies made with Mayakovsky’s participation. Guests will be shown clips from American and Soviet films of the 1920s.
As is known, Vladimir Mayakovsky admired American cinema and made Charlie Chaplin, Max Linder, Mary Pickford, and other actors the heroes of his poems and scripts. The influence of both westerns and American comedy can be traced in the screenwriting of the poet and his circle of directors. Vladimir Mayakovsky’s journey to the USA in 1925 served as the impetus for the creation of a whole series of works.
