According to the technical specifications of PJSC “KAMAZ”, engineers of Togliatti State University (TSU) have developed an original domestic solution — a primary retarder brake (aquatarder) for heavy machinery.
On August 20-21, the engineering unit developed at TSU successfully passed acceptance tests as part of an engine on a specialized stand at PJSC KAMAZ in Naberezhnye Chelny. The engine brake power values recorded by the sensors with the aquatarter fully confirmed the correctness of the mathematical calculations by the Tolyatti designers and compliance with the requirements of the technical specifications of the leading Russian machine-building company: brake power, smoothness of characteristics, thermal modes – everything worked normally, confirming a significant margin for scaling.
The project was implemented by the Tolyatti University within the framework of the Advanced Engineering School “HybridTech.” The university’s designers analyzed existing imported counterparts and developed their own promising hydrodynamic architecture. The unit operates directly on the engine’s coolant instead of oil, which significantly reduced the unit’s weight and made it maintenance-free.
The unique design is already legally protected. An application has been submitted to Rospatent for registration and protection as an intellectual property object, with PJSC KAMAZ as the patent holder, and among the authors are TSU specialists Vladimir Maksimenko and Evgeny Kalney.
Based on the results of the recent tests, the management of the Scientific and Technical Center of PJSC KAMAZ proposed to Togliatti scientists to immediately move to practical implementation of the technology. Currently, TGU engineers are considering the possibility of scaling and adapting the aquatarder to the parameters of the 667 engine with a working volume of 6.7 liters for KAMAZ passenger vehicles.
Deputy Chief Designer for Advanced Engines at the Scientific and Technical Center of PJSC KAMAZ Marat Khannanoin expressed gratitude to all project participants for fruitful cooperation, professionalism, and active work. “Braking characteristics are an important operational feature of a vehicle. The implementation of the project on the primary retardation brake for the KAMAZ R6 engine enabled our team to expand our expertise in design, refine testing methods, and achieve target values for the engine’s braking power. We highly appreciate all the efforts invested in this development and look forward to continuing mutually beneficial cooperation in future initiatives aimed at improving the consumer properties of the KAMAZ engine and vehicle.” – he noted.
TSU Rector Mikhail Krishtal emphasized that handing over a finished “in metal” unit to the automotive giant reflects a change in the role of higher education in ensuring the independence of domestic industry. “The main task of a modern university today is to move beyond being solely an educational superstructure. We must be a full-fledged, commercially effective participant in ensuring the technological sovereignty of the country. The university must generate and deliver turnkey solutions that are demanded by the real sector of the economy and operate proactively.”, – commented the rector of TSU.
