In the capital, special attention is paid to quality control and safety during the construction and reconstruction of gas industry facilities. To accomplish these tasks, the Moscow City Center (MGC) for the study of the physical and mechanical properties of structural materials of JSC “Mosgaz” was established 16 years ago. Its specialists inspect the elements of the distribution network, monitoring compliance with standards at all stages.

In the first half of 2026, more than 180 comprehensive material studies were conducted. Such tests include the assessment of mechanical properties, chemical composition, corrosion resistance, as well as resistance to low and high temperatures. This was reported by in the complex of Moscow’s municipal services.

All steel and polyethylene pipes used at the facilities of JSC “Mosgaz” undergo a multi-stage inspection.

“We have issued over 2,500 test reports for control joints of gas pipelines, about a third of the studies are related to polyethylene pipes. Samples are taken at each site and allow us to assess the quality of the welders’ work. At the same time, we consistently record the high reliability of the gas infrastructure under construction,” said Alexey Barsukov, Director of the Moscow City Center for the Study of Physico-Mechanical Properties of Structural Materials at JSC Mosgaz.

As part of the research, MGC staff conduct a series of experiments simulating various types of effects on materials and welded joints. The specialists perform both rapid tests and long-term observations, using a wide range of methods—from non-destructive to destructive.

Today, the Moscow Gas Center (MGC) is one of the leading domestic scientific centers conducting research on the properties of structural materials. Over the years, experts have developed and implemented quality standards that the components of the capital’s gas distribution system must meet. Thanks to this, the city ensures high reliability and safety of the engineering networks, which are built with years of durability to spare.

A large-scale project appeared on the mos.ru portal special project, dedicated to the development of key sectors of Moscow. Among them are transport, industry, healthcare, education, sports, and construction. The special project helps to learn how the capital has changed in recent years, what initiatives aimed at making the citizens’ lives even more comfortable are currently being implemented, and what awaits Moscow and its residents in the near future.

On the project page “Utility Infrastructure” you can learn about how engineering communications are being developed and updated in the capital, how the separate waste collection system works, and the unified urban management system.
