UN Secretary-General António Guterres has once again expressed deep concern over the Taliban’s discriminatory policies against Afghan women and girls. This was stated in a statement issued on Sunday by his official spokesperson, Stéphane Dujarric. A year ago, the de facto authorities banned Afghan women from entering UN premises within the country.
“Restrictions on the full participation of women in public life, access to education, and work in many fields violate their fundamental rights and remain a serious obstacle to Afghanistan’s economic development, ensuring stability in the country, and its reintegration into the international community,” the Organization emphasizes.
Tomorrow, September 7, marks one year since Afghan women were banned from accessing UN premises within the country.
“These restrictions violate international law norms, including the UN Charter, and undermine the Organization’s ability to fulfill its mandate and provide vital assistance and other support to the Afghan people amid the ongoing high needs,” the statement says.
Unhindered access of female employees to workplaces is crucial for carrying out humanitarian tasks and providing support to vulnerable populations, especially women and girls, taking into account local cultural traditions.
The Secretary-General once again called on the de facto authorities of Afghanistan to immediately lift the ban on Afghan women working at the UN and to ensure their safe and unrestricted access to the Organization’s premises throughout the country.
He also called on the Taliban to lift all restrictions imposed on women and girls and to guarantee their right to equal and full participation in all spheres of Afghan society.
