Beijing, September 7 /Xinhua/ — The delegation of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) has urgently called on Japan to completely, comprehensively, and finally destroy the chemical weapons left on Chinese territory without further delay. This was reported on Monday by Mao Ning, the official spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China.
As Mao Ning reported at a regular briefing for journalists, the Director-General of the OPCW, the Chairperson of the organization’s Executive Council, as well as permanent representatives of 12 countries to the OPCW and senior diplomats visited the PRC at the invitation of the Chinese side during the period from August 31 to September 5.
During the visit, they toured the county-level cities of Hunchun and Dunhua, as well as the Haerbaling district /all in Jilin Province, Northeast China/, where they observed the progress of excavation, processing, and disposal of chemical weapons left by Japan.
Recalling that the delegation’s visit coincided with China’s annual celebration of Victory in the War of Resistance of the Chinese People against Japanese Aggressors and in the World Anti-Fascist War, the official representative of the Chinese Foreign Ministry noted that Japan’s militaristic aggression brought enormous humanitarian disasters to China and left a historical misfortune in the form of abandoned chemical weapons.
According to the Chinese diplomat, following the visit, the delegation gained a deeper understanding of the severe damage that the chemical weapons left by Japan cause to the lives and property of the Chinese people, as well as to the country’s ecological environment.
The participants in the trip expressed their support for the efforts of the OPCW aimed at urging the Japanese side, in accordance with the Chemical Weapons Convention, to promptly fulfill its obligations in practice, completely, comprehensively, and finally destroy the chemical weapons left in China, return clean land to the Chinese people as soon as possible, and achieve the noble goal of the convention — the creation of a “world free of chemical weapons,” Mao Ning added. –0–
