In the North-Western Administrative Okrug, the construction of a new building of the Kurchatov School has been completed. It was built at the address: Volokolamskoye Highway, building 95a. This was reported by the Minister of the Moscow Government, head of the Moscow Department of Urban Development Policy Vladislav Ovchinsky.
“The five-story school building with a total area of 16,500 square meters is designed for 815 places. The building has joined the capital’s education system, becoming part of a large complex of the Kurchatov School. The interior space is organized on the principle of a school-city. Instead of traditional long corridors, there are ‘streets’ and spacious recreational areas that allow for organizing the educational process outside of classroom lessons. The central element of the interior is a multi-level atrium located on the first floor. On the roof, there is an open usable terrace with an observation deck, landscaping, and lighting,” said Vladislav Ovchinsky.
In addition to universal and specialized classrooms, the second floor houses two sports halls, the third and fourth floors contain media libraries with areas for individual and group activities, as well as laboratory and research complexes. The fifth floor features an IT training ground and an open terrace with an observation deck.
The construction of the building has been carried out under the supervision of the city authorities since September 2023 Committee of State Construction Supervision (Mosgosstroynadzor).
“The committee’s specialists accompanied the project from the preparatory stage to acceptance. Eleven control and supervisory activities were conducted on-site, including with the involvement of employees from the subordinate Expertise Center for instrumental quality control of the completed works and materials used. Based on the final inspection results, a conclusion was issued confirming that the building complies with the approved project documentation requirements,” added the chairman of Mosgosstroynadzor.
The architectural concept is based on creating the effect of a floating building stretched along the riverbank. Due to enlarged spans and the inward shifting of load-bearing structures, the upper floors visually seem to hover above the ground.
The entire first floor is almost completely designed using stained-glass glazing, which gives the building a sense of lightness. The facades are clad with aluminum cassettes, glass, and stemalit — modern materials that create the image of a research center. The unconventional shape of the building with rounded corners is emphasized by inter-floor bands of contrasting white color, and the protruding decorative elements of the facade set a clear rhythm around the entire perimeter.
The needs of children with disabilities were taken into account to create a comfortable educational environment.
A sports core was created on the school grounds, including a circular running track, multipurpose courts for playing football, basketball, and volleyball, and a long jump zone. An amphitheater with stands was also placed there. On the adjacent territory, playgrounds for different age groups and an area for school-wide events were arranged. The entire school territory was landscaped and improved.
South of the school is a picturesque Moscow River embankment with a viewing platform.
