Delegation Republic of Abkhazia headed by the Deputy Prime Minister of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic Edward Djansukhovich Nanba and representatives of the Center for People’s Diplomacy visited Novosibirsk State University. Abkhazia and NSU are united by the name of an outstanding scientist and organizer — Ilia Nestorovich Veku a. In 1907, he was born in the Galsky District of Abkhazia, and in 1959 he became the first rector of the newly established Novosibirsk State University.
Today, both in Russia and in Abkhazia, the memory of Vekua, his scientific and organizational legacy, is carefully preserved. During the visit, the tenth rector of NSU, academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences Mikhail Fedoruk, who led the university from 2012 to 2026, told the guests about the history of the university and showed unique documents related to its first head — personal files, initial orders, program articles in which Ilya Vekua formulated the principles and his vision of a new type of university.
In Abkhazia, they also know well and honor the contribution of their compatriot to the development of education and science. A monument to Ilya Vekua has been erected in the Gali district. A folk diplomacy center, together with NSU, created an exhibition dedicated to Ilya Nestorovich, which was presented as a gift to the city. Now this permanent exhibition operates in the Gali House of Culture. In April 2027, an olympiad dedicated to the 120th anniversary of I. N. Vekua’s birth is planned for students.
At the end of the visit, the delegation toured the university buildings, visited the NSU History Museum, and saw how the university is developing, whose foundations were once laid by its first rector — Ilya Nestorovich Vekua.
