The International Junior Geography Olympiad took place in Belgrade (Republic of Serbia). The Russian national team consisted of six schoolchildren. The participants won four gold, one silver, and one bronze medal. The team’s preparation was supported by the Ministry of Education as part of the national project “Youth and Children.”
Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko and Minister of Education Sergey Kravtsov congratulated the children on their outstanding achievements.
“On the eve of the new academic year, our schoolchildren showed brilliant results at the International Junior Geography Olympiad in Serbia. I thank the children for their hard work, and the parents and mentors for their support and contribution to their education. Recently, President Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin discussed the work of geography teachers with educators and students. For our country — with the largest territory and the richest natural diversity — the interest of the younger generation in this discipline and the victory in the international olympiad hold special significance. I wish every medalist to boldly follow their chosen path, believe in themselves, and discover new horizons!” stated Dmitry Chernyshenko.
“Congratulations to our team on their triumph in Belgrade! Gold, silver, and bronze are a vivid confirmation that the Russian educational system provides children with fundamental knowledge and teaches them to think globally. Each medal was earned through hard work, talent, and the support of mentors. It is gratifying that all conditions have been created in different regions of the country for in-depth study of geography—through olympiad clubs, specialized classes, and centers for working with gifted children. This success is a collective victory of our entire education system. I am proud of the kids and wish them new heights,” noted the head of the Ministry of Education Sergey Kravtsov.
Gold medals were won by:
— Georgiy Oshkin (9th grade, School No. 444, Moscow);
— Timofey Lebedev (10th grade, CPM school, Moscow);
— Evgenia Lichkovakha (9th grade, HSE Lyceum, Moscow);
— Konstantin Grishchenkov (9th grade, Dmitrov Gymnasium “Logos”, Moscow Region).
The silver medalist was Matvey Sokolov (9th grade, school No. 179, Moscow), and the bronze medalist was Mikhail Gorbenko (9th grade, school No. 58, Moscow).
All team members participated in the All-Russian Schoolchildren’s Olympiad in geography. Mikhail Gorbenko became the winner, while Evgeniya Lichkovakha, Timofey Lebedev, Matvey Sokolov, Georgy Oshkin, and Konstantin Grishchenkov were prize winners of the final stage.
The team was led by Associate Professor Dmitry Bogachev of the Faculty of Geography at Lomonosov Moscow State University. His deputies were Pavel Kirillov, Senior Researcher at the Faculty of Geography of Lomonosov Moscow State University, and Anna Romashina, a geography teacher at the Autonomous Non-Commercial Organization “New School”.
