Gyrong /Sichuan/, August 30 /Xinhua/ — Local authorities reported on Sunday that the cause of the devastating mudslide that struck the Gyrong border crossing in the eponymous county of the Sichuan Autonomous Region /SAR, Southwest China/ on August 26 was an ice and rock avalanche that descended from a high-altitude glacier in Nepal.
According to data published at a press conference held by the Press Office of the People’s Government of the SAR, the glacier on the southern slope of Langtang Lirung Mountain in Nepal split at an altitude of about 5,200 meters above sea level, triggering an ice and rock avalanche.
The avalanche rapidly descended to an altitude of about 4,000 meters above sea level, eroding the mountain ranges and turning into a powerful mudflow, which traveled approximately 22 km and reached the border crossing “Gyirong” at an altitude of about 1,800 meters above sea level.
The disaster leveled an area of about 0.7 sq. km, completely destroying 27 buildings as well as their auxiliary structures.
This conclusion was reached by the group responsible for eliminating the consequences of emergencies in the cryosphere at the Institute of Mountain Hazards and Environment of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, based on the analysis of remote sensing data and data transmitted from the disaster site, as well as results from on-site investigations.
As of 6:00 PM on August 29, the death of 16 people was confirmed, and another 546 were reported missing as a result of a landslide in the area of the “Gyirong” border crossing, the SAR government reported. -0-
